Dear Friends and Family,

Lucinda Marker is pleased to report that today John Tull was promoted to the position of Acting Deputy Secretary for the Department of Economic Development. He will be responsible for the day-today internal management of the Department and will provide leadership on inter- departmental projects. He will also be in charge of the legislative strategy for the Department. Those “big boots” as grand-daughter Elli named his prosthetic legs, were made for walking. Lucinda plans to lounge about eating bon bons this winter. Just kidding……I don’t even really know what a bon bon looks like.

Great to hear from Matt in New York!! Thanks for the tips and we look forward to seeing you sometime soon.

Love to all,
J&L

Update October 9, 2005

Dear Friends and Family,

In her message, Sloan refers to an article which appeared on the front page of today’s Santa Fe New Mexican regarding plague. We are mentioned quite a bit and there is an enormous photo, but I don’t think you can get that on-line. Anyway, we are posting the site, but never seem to be able to provide a direct link. Here it is: http://www.freenewmexican.com/.

Dear Friends and Family,

Our most wondrous webmasters, Stuio X, have been upgrading and replacing servers and so we have not been able to update the last number of days. It seems that all is well now.

Well, His Royal Highness, the Acting Deputy Cabinet Secretary of the Department of Economic Development is working his cute little butt off. He is an even busier bee than we thought imaginable. Feel free to send him kind and encouraging words at your leisure. He comes home, eats and passes out until the alarm shrilly awakens us on these dark fall mornings. But he absolutely loves it. What a great thing it is for this man who was banging on death’s door almost three years ago to now be moving and shaking around our wonderful state. Lucinda beams with pride.

Lucinda’s work is also building and budding. And yes, we are still cooking a book. It’s been a process.

We are back in therapy (which we believe in) to work on some of our “holy shit what the hell happened here” issues. If any of you saw the Joan Didion piece in the NYT’s Sunday magazine a couple of weeks ago about the rather sudden death of her husband ….well…..wow. I want to read the book immediately. We both felt a fierce connection to that writing.

We were so happy to meet and have dinner with our Santa friend Maggie Hepburn and her brother and sister-in-law from Houston. We also were delighted to hear from Tex and Vaughn Gross from Dallas. They were in Santa Fe for a wedding this weekend and we met them for breakfast. We just love it when fun Texans come take us out to eat.

The weather is beautiful. The trees in the mountains have pretty much seen their best days. There is snow on the mountain and it is beautiful and warm here in Santa Fe. We tend to have high-pitch giggle fits when we assess our environment. We are very lucky people who ran into a bit of pretty bad luck and pulled through it.

So A very happy birthday wish to our very special friend Joan Ellis who Lucinda first met about 22 years ago doing a play here. And a very happy birthday to Bar-hop who is married to Tull’ cousin. She sent me one of the funniest 50 cards and now I have to find just the right one to get her back.

We are still in some scary times. We all have worries. Maybe we can just focus on carving some pumpkins for some R&R. Enjoy the leaves. If you enjoy knitting, knit yourself or others a nice warm sweater to wear this winter. Bundle up. Stay together, read good books, try to stay calm.

Come on over and John will make his Texas chili and I’ll make cornbread.

Love.

Dear Friends and Family,

His most Excellent Deputy Cabinet Secretary’s presence was requested at a reception in Albuquerque last night…..well…at a law firm. His Excellence was then requested to attend a meeting in the fair city of Grants, New Mexico today. So the old wife of His Excellence drove his most excellent arse to Albuquerque and attended the law firm gala and then on to fair Grants rather late in the evening. We arrived at the Holiday Inn Express and early this morning J.Tull went to his meeting.

Ye olde wife found perhaps the best establishment in Grants for lunch, a very local joint called El Cafeterio. Pretty good green chili. Afterward, we sprinted home to our three lonely pets. One night alone they can handle, but not without angst.

John H. Tull Jr. attempts another brand new day at not smoking tomorrow (October 22, 2005). Lucinda Marker thought about booking an international flight out of here, but has instead opted to stick around with car keys constantly in hand.

We are hoping that Mona and Bob are hightailing it out of Naples.

Dear Friends and Family,

John Tull has just suffered through his second day of giving up the cigs. All of you who have ever quit know just how difficult this is. Those of you who have never started and have given it the slightest thought………..DON’T!! It is truly one evil habit. Tull is attending his first Cabinet meeting tomorrow and he knows it would not be appropriate to excuse himself for a smoke.

Lucinda’s mother turns 81 this week on the 26th. Other than a few aches and pains she is the picture of health.

Have a terrific week.

Love,
John and Lucinda

Dear Friends and Family,

So far so good with JT’s personal no-smoking campaign. He is too busy to think about it while at work and too tired to do anything about it when he gets home. The improvement in his energy and endurance has been mind-boggling.

Over the weekend we made a trip to Albuquerque and he completely forgot to bring his cane. We visited Lucinda’s sister who recently bought an incumbent bike which has a comfortable seat, three wheels and is quite low to the ground. Mr. Tull got on it and rode around!! He loved it!! So now we will think about getting him one. Maybe he could even ride some of our old hiking trails.

It is always hear-warming for us when we realize there are still so many of you out there who check in on the website even though we don’t hear from you often and that there are those of you who have been following it who we’ve still to meet! Hope you all have a wonderful week and Happy Halloween!

Love to all,
J&L
